The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has announced that total death toll in Thailand’s central and northeastern regions soared to 152 as of Friday while 63 others were recorded in the South.

The department said 13 provinces in the central and northestern regions were affected by the floods which began in October.

It has projected that 827,599 households and cultivation areas of about 6.3 million rai (around 2.49 million acres) in the two regions to be affected by the floods.

Six southern provinces were devastated by the floods, which have officially affected 856,717 households, it said.

Soopachai Barnpubtong, Deputy Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, said more than 10 million rai  (over 3.95 million acres) of crops had been damaged by the floods and that the Agricultural Extension Department had been assigned to assess the damage in detail so that assistance could be provided to people who were affected.

Agricultural Extension Department director-general Ath Intalak said his department would complete the study within 30 days.

Initial government assistance is that each rice farmer will receive Bt2,098 (about US$70) for every rai of paddy that was damaged. Also, field crop owners will each receive Bt2,921 (around $98) and horticultural crop owners will each get Bt4,908 (nearly $165). These rates are applicable to every farmer in the country.
