PATTAYA – April 2,2014 [Pattaya Daily News]; a 19 year old male went to Jomien beach to celebrate his high school graduation. He was walking on the floating pontoons when a wave knocked him into the sea causing his death. Also recently 2 people had drowned in this area as a result of the new pontoons. People like to walk on the new pontoons because they are flat but they are unaware of the dangers when doing so because so many people have been knocked into the sea by the waves where they have drowned.

Ronnakit Aekasing-the vice mayor of Pattaya- said he urgently ordered the pontoons to be revised and to change the pontoons so they have a 2 metre space between them. He also said that he believed this will stop tourists from walking on them, and if need be a rescue boat will be able to pass through the gap in an emergency. He also added that more signs should be put in place to warn tourists about the dangers.

He also refused accusation that they purchased inappropriate pontoons instead of the old style which is like a floating balls. He explained that they didn’t purchase the inappropriate floating pontoons which were allocated by the government. Plus, he insisted that these docks are stronger and can be used various ways but are more expensive than the old floating ball style.
