Five Men Held Over Threat to Safety of Pope

Metropolitan Police have arrested five men in an operation launched by officers from the force’s Counter Terrorism Command after receiving a terror alert.

 UK, 18th September 2010: Police surrounded the pope mobile in a major operation to protect the Pope after threats of terrorism was received yesterday. Five men, believed to be Algerian Nationals employed by and agency to work as cleaners for the council, were arrested in a raid, in relation to the threats at 0545 BST, (British summer time) and are being held on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism, under the Terrorism Act 2000, at the Central London Police Station.


Officers are continuing with searches of property of the agency and residential premises in North and East London, but so far have failed to find anything hazardous. The five men are aged between 26-50 years.

It has not been made clear as to whether the plot was related to the Pope, but in a statement, the force said that a decision to arrest the five men were made after police received information following initial inquiries by detectives.

Following the arrests, policing arrangements for the papal visit have been reviewed and were found to be satisfactory.

Top police officers from Scotland and England had spent months planning the security arrangements in preparation of the visit which included threat assessments, standard arrangements covering the transportation of significant public figures and crowd control.

The policing bill alone for the visit is expected to top £1 million.
