Mr. Surapong, a medical doctor and a loyalist of deposed prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, was royally appointed finance minister in Thailand’s new coalition government yesterday.

He made the pledge after meeting with senior Finance Ministry officials, saying that this government wanted to jump start the national economy within six months, especially on revitalising local and foreign investor confidence.

Mr. Surapong also said his ministry and economy-related government agencies would jointly establish a “war room” to monitor the national economy on a weekly basis.

The “war room” will meet every Monday and senior officials of the ministry along with the Bank of Thailand, Budget Bureau and the National Economic and Social Development Board will participate at its meetings, he said.

Measures to improve the economy, according to Mr. Surapong, include spending through the so-called Village Fund in a bid to boost income of people at the grass-root level, reducing tax to assist low-income earners and a speed on constructing nine mass transit systems in Bangkok and outlying areas, designed for reducing heavy traffic in the capital.

These projects were initiated by the ousted government of Mr. Thaksin with the planned construction of the nine integrated mass transit systems stalled due to the September 19, 2006 bloodless coup which toppled his government. (TNA)-
