Bangkok, 29th of Febuary 2008 [TNA]: Once the ex-premier managed to clear out his personal business upon return to the country, he said, he would come to see him to discuss ways to address the economic problem.

He would take the opportunity to approach Mr. Thaksin to be his advisor. However, no official position would be offered to ensure the Constitutional Tribunalt’s ruling on a 5-year ban for his political activities is not violated, he said.

The former premier had met and discussed with world-class businesspersons in various venues during his exile. So, he should be aware of what foreign investors want.

Also, Mr. Surapong said he would discuss with the ex-premier how to deal with the 30 per cent reserve withholding measure since he had already received first-hand information on the matter from the Bank of Thailand.

He expressed confidence he would announce a clear policy on the capital controls within a few days, not one to two months as many expected.

He affirmed the government had considered the issue with caution and come up with contingency measures to prevent possible panic in the market.

Regarding the continued appreciation of baht, he said the central bank had kept a close watch on the situation. It would attempt to prevent the baht from strengthening more extensively than that of other currencies of neighbouring countries, he said. (TNA)
