Pattaya, the 19th of January 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: Mayor Ittiphol and CAT president Mr. Jirayut Rungsrithong joined in agreement, signing the MOU for cooperation between the two parties in front of honorary guest and members of the press at Pattaya City Hall on Tuesday. The MOU agreed for an initial “phase 1” investment of 700 million baht, to establish a fibre optic network around the city center.

Mayor Ittiphol confirmed that the agreement for the construction of an underground fibre optic network was the first of its kind in Thailand, signifying CAT telecoms confidence that Pattaya City was a center for economic and technological development within the Kingdom. Another reason behind the selection of Pattaya as the first city to have this technology installed is the acknowledgment by the national government and CAT telecom that Pattaya is a major tourist hub of the country.

Mr. Rungsrithong revealed that the initial 700 million baht investment was for the construction of “phase 1” of the project which will entail the installation of the base system and a small network localised to the inner city areas. Mr. Rungsrithong also stated that the expected speeds achieved through the optical fibre network will be between 100-150mbps. The agreement signed between Pattaya City and CAT telecom is expected to significantly decrease the complexity of investment in such a project due to the cooperation between the government and private sector.

Construction of the first phase is estimated to take approximately 10 months, with “phase 2” expected to require further investment of between 500-700 million baht. “Phase 2” will connect the outskirts of the city and surrounding districts after “phase 1” has been put in place. Initial plans revealed that constructions would begin firstly on the Sukhumvit and 2nd Roads.
