CHONBURI – January 28, 2013; a report of an attempted rape of a female motorbike-for-hire driver was received by Pol. Lt. Col. Sirisak Wongwiwat, Traffic Inspector, Amphur Sriracha, Chonburi province.

The motorbike driver had picked up the suspect at the Sriracha market, and was directed to take him to an area near the Wachiravuth boy scout camp in Sriracha.

But when they arrived at a quiet place without any people, he told the driver to park the motorbike. He then tried to drag her into the forest to rape her, but the woman resisted and escaped. Then she called other motorbike-for-hire drivers to notify the police to arrest the rapist.

After being notified, the police and the rescue officers of Sawangpratheeptharmmasatharn Sriracha foundation rushed to the scene. Arriving officers found the waiting victim, identified as Mrs. Jirapha Phol-arsa, age 35, who was still shaken by the attempted rape.

She said the man who tried to rape her was a thin man wearing a cross-pattern shirt with pants, and had run away into the forest. The police dispersed forces to blockade the area to arrest him. They were searching for an hour but found no trace of him.

Then several local people notified the police that someone had climbed a wall to hide near a house. They assumed that the stranger might be the trouble maker whom the police were looking for. So the police went to see, and found the suspect hiding under a mango tree. He had taken off his shirt and was wearing only pants.

When the man saw the police, he tried to escape again, but the police surrounded him and made the arrest. The suspect was identified as Mr. Somphol Wangraikarn, age 45.

The suspect admitted to police that he had hired the motorbike-for-hire driver to bring him to the area, but he denied trying to rape the driver. The police didn’t believe the suspect, and restrained him to take to the Sriracha police station to prosecute further according to the law.
