Fake Vietnamese Drug Carrying Priest Arrested

Detective officers of the Customs Department at Suvarnnabhumi airport arrested an elderly Vietnamese man who was disguised as a priest and was caught carrying Crystal Methamphetamines (ice) worth 8 million THB with a total weight of 2,300 g. at Suvarnnabhumi airport. He claimed the suitcase wasn't his.

BANGKOK – January 1, 2014 [Pattaya Daily News]; at 3.00 p.m. at the Office of Detection and Suppression, The Customs Department of Suvarnnabhumi airport, Mr. Phaisarn Chuenjit (Deputy Director of The Customs Department), Mrs. Rawi Pratheepdolpreecha (Deputy Director of The Customs Department), Mrs. Monthira Cherdchu (the officer of the customhouse at Phuket airport), Mr. Joomphol Raengkasikorn (the specialist in investigation and suppression), Mr. Thada Choomchaiyo (Director of Investigation and Suppression 3), Mr. Decha Wichaidit (the head of investigation and suppression division 1) and the officers of investigation and suppression of the Customs Department at Suvarnnabhumi airport together made a statement about the arrest of Mr. Ngean Wan Thia, aged 64, a Vietnamesenational, with the exhibit of Crystal Methamphetamines weight approximately 2,300 g (including the wrap) which worth approximately 8 million THB.

Mr. Phaisarn said that the officers are especially strict to inspect all suspicious passengers. At 1.50 a.m. on BANGKOK – January 1, 2014; the investigation and suppression officers together with the customhouse of Phuket airport found a foreign man dressed like a priest in according to information from the spy so the officers exposed themselves and asked to inspect his suitcase by using the x-ray machine. They then found some unusual items at the bottom of the suitcase so they opened the suitcase to check inside and found 1 pack of navy blue carbon paper that was wrapped in a transparent plastic bag which contained white crystals with a total weight including the wrap was approximately 2,300 g and when the officers tested the white crystals they found that the white crystals were the narcotic type 1of Methamphetamine (ice).

From initial investigation, Mr. Ngean Wan Thia claimed that he was a priest that traveled from Shenzhen, China, by China Southern Airline, flight CZ 6093 to pilgrimage in Thailand and before he got on the aircraft there was a Vietnamese woman who let him carry this suitcase and give it to the Vietnamese person in Phuket province which she told him that when he arrived at Phuket somebody will call him. But from inspecting his documents, the officers didn’t find any documents indicated that he was a priest and the information in his passport also indicated that he was a tourist.

Therefore, the officers charged Mr. Ngean Wan Thia with the allegation of having grade 1 (ice) in possession and bringing it into the kingdom for selling without permission which such actions are an offence according to the Narcotics Act of the year 1979 and other related laws. The officers sent the defendant with exhibit to the investigation officer of Narcotics Suppression Bureau to prosecute further according to the Thai law.
