Facebook Post Leads to Algerian Gang Arrest

Phuket police have arrested an Algerian gang that stole tourist’s property. They were arrested after a video clip of their behaviour was posted on Facebook. The 2 Algerian defendants confessed to the crimes.

PHUKET – February 22, 2014 [Pattaya Daily News]; Pol.Lt.Col. Khundech Na Nongkhai (Deputy Superintendent of Ka Thu police station, Phuket province) and Pol.Lt.Col. Sutthichai Thianpho (Inspector) together made a statement about the arrest of Mr. Habal Apdelkader, aged 28, Algerian nationality and Mr. Hardybirzinc Murad, aged 32, Algerian nationality, in the allegation of together stealing property in area of Amphur Koh Samui, Surat Thani province, there was widespread publicising of their photo and a video clip on Facebook named Srinuan Thaifood . It showed the 2 defendants stealing from tourists and warned tourists to be aware of these 2 foreigners.

Pol.Lt.Col. Sutthichai Thianpho said that after the posting of the video clip of the thieves stealing tourist’s property the police went to inspect the area of Pa Tong beach as they were afraid that there may be the same incident occurring there, some bystanders who had seen the video clip informed the police that they had seen the foreign suspects. Pol.Lt.Col. Sutthichai together with the detective police team went to question the suspects and found that they had a similar appearance to the suspects in the video clip so the officers took them to the police station for further questioning.

Initially, the 2 Algerian suspects denied all allegations but after the police showed them the video clip then they confessed. They said that after they had committed the crimes they fled to Phuket. The police also would like Thai and foreign tourists that have had property stolen to come and identify the 2 defendants. After inspecting their history of travel the police found that they have often travelled backwards and forwards Koh Samui Island and Phuket in order to escape arrest. The 2 defendants were arrested in the allegation of being aliens that had entered and stayed in the kingdom of Thailand without permission and also coordinated with Bor Phood police station in order to pick them up to prosecuted them further according to the Thai law.
