The event was originally scheduled to come to Phuket back in March of 2005, but due to the tragic tsunami, it has been rescheduled for 2008.

Paragon Events, a Bangkok based organization, has announced that the F1 race will take place in Phuket from March 14 to 16, 2008. The venue will be the Deep Sea Port at Ao Makham.

“From March 14 to 16, 2008, Phuket will provide the ideal location for the F1 Powerboat Grand Prix, the first World Championship level event in Thailand,” Paragon said.

“The F1 UIM World Championship Phuket Grand Prix 2008 will be the biggest international sporting event held in Thailand,” Paragon added

“F1 Powerboats provide the world’s most exciting water sports race, the ultimate test of man and machine – 24 drivers competing in 13 races, at different places, around the globe for the right to be called the F1 UIM Powerboat Champion 2008,” he went on to say.

The F1 Powerboat racing has been around for 25 years and some have compared its land cousin, Formula 1 car racing. Both racing styles have similar rules, even though they compete in different elements.

Qualifying for the race takes place on the Saturday of the race weekend. This decides which boat will take the pole position, first place starter, and the formation of the grid on race day, which will be on Sunday.

On race day, spectators will be treated to a wonderfully fast-paced 45 minute race where the boats exceed speeds of 240 kilometers per hour.

The drivers have to be in peak physical and mental condition to partake in the race. While driving these water crafts at such great speeds, the drivers are subject to pressure up to 6 G’s no fewer than 120 times per race. The boats have the ability to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere 3.5 seconds.

The Grand Prix is regulated by the Union Internationale Motonautique, or UIM for short.

Make sure you mark this one on your calendar and come out to the race and cheer on your favourite racer.
