Pattaya, the 1st of May 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: The largest fleet of keeled and multi-hulled boats took to the water yesterday in what was a fine day of racing. Final touches and tactical refinements were made at Jomtien’s Ocean Marina Yacht Club before the boats headed out to the offshore starting line at 11:00am.

Many of the regions finest sailors took to the water in a hard fought battle for the IRC Racing 1 class; Matt Allen’s ‘Ichi Ban’ took first place on corrected time whilst the Ray Roberts led ‘Evolution Racing’ got line honours. The second race of the day remains in the protest room with a result expected to be announced today.

The Royal Thai Navy entrant had some success after winning both races in the IRC Racing 2 class whilst the handicapped Cruising class saw the top three boats finish within 5 minutes of each other. The Nigel Hopkins led ‘Celere’ took line honours ahead of ‘Kirafiki’ and ‘Tai II’ in second and third respectively.

In the Coronation Cup the Cris Way skippered ‘Magic Dragon’ came home first, followed by one of the three Singapore based team in ‘The Weasel’. The multi-hull Ocean race also completed two races yesterday with ‘Free Wheeler’ and ‘Thor’ winning the two races respectively.

Series standings at the end of the Day 1 saw Malaysian Ahmad Syukrii Abdul Azizi at the top after some tough racing. Local sailor from the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, Tacharin Narbonne, took second place with World Optimist Champion, the popular Thai girl Noppakao Poonpat in third.
