Chalerm was arrested in January 2001 after being accused of paying procurers to find him teenage girls for sex. He allegedly paid each teen 4,000 baht to have sex with him at a hotel in the Bangkok suburb of Prathum Thani. All four girls were under 15 at the time.

The court found Chalerm, 71, guilty of sexually abusing four girls under the age of 15, between Nov 23, 2000 and Jan 3, 2001.

”The defendant was well aware that what he did was a serious crime,” the court said.

The Appeals Court decision last January added 20 years to the 16-year sentence a lower court gave Chalerm. Sex with a girl under 15 years of age brings a charge of statutory rape.

The Supreme Court of Prathum Thani said in a statement that the presiding judge felt Chalerm should be punished more severely because he broke the law while he was a senator.

At the Thanyaburi Provincial Court Tuesday, Judge Samart Ardnarong presided over the reading of verdict that upheld a previous ruling by the Appeal Court, handing Chalerm a total of 36years in jail for committing sex crimes involving underage girls six years ago.
