Ex-Prime Minister Dies Following Long Battle with Cancer

Former Thai Prime Minister Mr Samak Sunthorawet has lost his fight for survival, dying on Tuesday morning from liver cancer.

Bangkok, the 24th of November 2009 [Pattaya Daily News]: In the early hours of Tuesday morning it was reported to the press that former Thai Prime Minister Mr Samak Sunthorawet age 74, had lost his battle with liver cancer. Mr Sunthorawet was diagnosed with the potentially fatal disease approximately one year ago. After having gone to the US in order to receive specialist treatment Mr Sunthorawet returned to Thailand. His condition severely deteriorated on the 22nd of November and he was subsequently pronounced dead on the 24th, two days later. The funeral will take place tomorrow at the 100 year old Benjamabophit Dusit Wanaram Temple in Bangkok.

Mr Sunthorawet was receiving treatment for his illness at the Bamrungrat Hospital in Bangkok when his condition severely worsened. He was taken to the intensive care unit but later died from the disease at the age of 74.

Mr Sunthorawet was born on the 13th of April 1935 in Bangkok, the 4th child in a family of 6. Mr Sunthorawet got involved in politics in 1968 when he became a member of the Thai Democrat Party following which he took up a seat on the House of Representatives. He occupied many other important positions within the Thai government before he was appointed as Thailand?s 25th prime minister on the 29th of January 2008, following the dismissal of Thaksin Shinawatra in a military coup.
