Reid, the former Sunderland, Leeds United and Manchester City manager, will commence work on Sept. 1 and his role will be to steer Thailand to their first World Cup finals in 2014.

“It is confirmed, we have agreed a deal,” said Worawi, who met with Reid’s agent on Wednesday.
Worawi has a great deal of confidence in the abilities of Peter Reid, who is very experienced in the field of soccer management. Worawi said ” His background in England as a coach and as a player will be invaluable to us.”

Reid replaces Charnwit Polcheewin, who resigned last month when Thailand were eliminated from the 2010 World Cup qualifiers after a campaign where they only won one out of six matches. Thailand’s previous foreign coaches have not been tremendously successful, due apparently to cultural differences, intervention by federation officials and the poor discipline of Thai players.

However, for Reid the situation will be different as he will have sufficient time to prove himself and a long contract. This will enable Reid to build the team and take them to a higher level. Worawi acknowledged that previously they had wasted time, but this time, he said: “we want to give ourselves the best chance.”

The Thai soccer team is mostly drawn from locally-based players from Thailand’s semi-professional league, some of whom augment their income with other jobs. However, Worawi said he was optimistic about the team’s chances in 2014.
