Ethiopian Airliner Crashes Killing Passengers and Crew

An Ethiopian airliner has crashed into the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Lebanon shortly after takeoff from Beirut International Airport.

Lebanon, the 25th of January 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: The Ethiopian airlines, Boeing 737-800 with 83 passengers and 7 crew aboard disappeared from air-traffic radars just off the coast of Lebanon on Monday morning. At present the cause of the crash is unknown, however; search and rescue investigations are ongoing.

Lebanese Army and UN Interim Forces are scouring the Mediterranean Sea in the vicinity that the aircraft is believed to have crashed, however; no sign of the plane has been found at present, stated a report from Ghazi El Aridi (Lebanon’s Minister for Public Works and Transportation). The plane is believed to have crash 3.5km west of Na’ameh, which is 15km south of Beirut. 

The plane left Rafik Hariri International Airport in Beirut at approximately 2:27am headed for the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa, shortly after takeoff the flight disappeared from the traffic control tower screens. Severe thunderstorm were affecting the area with reports from coastal regions stating that a large fireball was witnessed crashing into the sea around the time of the incident.

Passengers onboard the flight included; 54 Lebanese nationals, 22 Ethiopians, 2 British-Lebanese, an Iraqi, a Syrian, a Canadian-Lebanese, a Russian-Lebanese and a Frenchman. Seven crew members were also present on the flight.
