Bangkok, the 25th of August 2010: To be played at the Rajamangala National Stadium in Bangkok, the exhibition (friendly) match will see an expected full-strength Chelsea squad meet a contingent of Thai Premier League stars, similar in arrangement to the recent Atletico Madrid exhibition match.

Tentatively scheduled for the end of July 2011, in preparation for Chelsea’s impending season, the match has been dubbed an honorary match celebrating His Majesty the King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s reign as Thailand’s monarch.

Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay met with Football Association of Thailand president Worawi Makudi yesterday to announce the staging of the fixture, anticipated to be one of the most popular sporting events to be staged in Thailand in recent times. Promising a full contingent of Chelsea’s stars Mr. Gourlay assured the Thai people that the match would be one not to miss.

“I am here today to guarantee that you will see all our stars led by (Didier) Drogba, (Frank) Lampard and (John) Terry. We will bring our first team squad here because it is a part of our pre-season preparations, just like we did in the USA before this campaign began.”

In addition to the main spectacle Chelsea and their contingent of stars, staff and trainers are expected to hold various coaching and player training clinics during their Thai visit, with numerous fan days and events planned for the general population.

“We will not just come here to play and leave,” Gourlay said, “We have a year to engage with our increasing fan base in Thailand as we build towards the game.”

The trip will mark their first visit to Thailand in over 12 years, while they are also expected to visit Malaysia and one other unconfirmed Asian nation as part of their pre-season tour in the region.

Reigning Premier League and FA Cup champions, Chelsea have started their bid to retain the title in scintillating style, winning their opening two matches with consecutive 6-0 score lines. They are the only team to maintain a perfect record and coupled with their 8-0 end of season win have scored an impressive 20 goals in three matches, without conceding.
