Pattaya, 1 December 2010 (PDN): At 4.00 pm on Wednesday a group of approximately 300 workers from Pattaya’s nightlife venues had gathered on Pattaya 3rd Road to protest against the restrictions on operating hours, currently set at 3:00 am closing for those venues inside the entertainment zone, and 2:00 am for those outside. The protesters, holding placards demanding later closing times, marched to City Hall where they were addressed by Pattaya’s mayor, Itthiphol Khunplume.

He announced that he had already sent a letter to Police Bureau Commissioner, police Colonel Wichian Photphosri Colonel Wichian Photphosri confirming closing times in the two zones at 4:30 am and 3:00 am respectively, on condition that all venues strictly comply to Thai law, especially the 3 measures previously announced : 1. No under18 year-olds inside the venues, 2. No drugs and 3. No weapons or other dangerous illegal items in the venues.

The venue operators were concerned that the recent political crisis and the economic climate had dramatically affected the tourist business in Pattaya. Hopefully, without any further instability or troubles, tourists would return during the November 2010 to April 2011 period and longer opening hours would help businesses recover from the previous hard times.

As for the plans for 24 hour opening the mayor said he expected a positive report on their progress around 10 pm tonight. The Police Bureau and Police Region 2 Commissioners, together with Chon Buri Police Superintendent had all been contacted concerning this. A letter had also been sent to the Cabinet. He asked the venue workers to be patient.

Mr. Bandit Siritonyong, a protest representative, revealed that they would wait a little longer for the reply (regarding 24 hour opening). However if there was no result within the early part of this month, the mayor can expect further protest rallies.
