January 31st 2011 {PDN], at 00.30 Police General Kriangkraiwut Buagla, investigation official at Police Station Pattaya, was notified about the passing of a foreigner in room No. 27 on the 2nd storey of the apartment block of Chaophraya Resort, soi Thephrasit 8  Moo 10   Nongphrue  Chonburi. Investigation officials and a rescue foundation team immediately attended the scene.

In room No. 27 they found the body of Mr Christopher Wood, a 56 year-old Englishman , lying on the bed, wearing nothing but a pair of shorts. The body had been dead for about 10 minutes before the officials arrived. Mrs Wasana Gumgaew, 40, wife of Mr. Christopher, was found crying, hugging the dead body of her husband, her friends gathering to share her sorrow.

Mrs. Wasana reported that she and her husband had been married for many years already. Her husband would come to visit Pattaya once a year. They had been renting the room they are currently staying in for about 3 months. Her husband had never had any health problems or complaints. On the night of the incident, Mrs. Wasana had planned to go to her friends’ wedding. Her husband, Mr. Wood was invited too. He however said, that he was exhausted from his trip to Laos, where he had been to renew his passport. Mrs. Wasana suggested he rest first. When Mrs. Wasana came back from the wedding, she and her husband had greeted each other as usual. He still seemed healthy, but was still lying on the bed. When he got up to go to the bathroom, he started feeling faint and fell, but did not seem to suffer any injuries. He got up easily and said his leg was numb and that his head was aching, but that it was just a small matter and nothing serious. After that he continued heading to the bathroom, while Mrs. Wasana went to sit on the bed.

In the bathroom was where Mr. Wood got a shock, his body tensed and he lost consciousness. Mrs. Wasana immediatly called the rescue foundation and asked the staff of their residence to come and help carry her husband out of the bathroom onto the bed, where his body was tense and jerking as if experiencing seizures until he stopped breathing. Mrs. Wasana and the staff tried to help as much as they could, while waiting for a rescue team to take her husband to the hospital. When the team arrived it was already too late. Mr. Wood had already passed away, in front of the eyes of his wife Mrs Wasana. After that Mrs. Wasana called the police to notify them of the incident.

The police examined the body and did not find any wounds or indications of a struggle or fight. They therefore believe that Mr. Wood must have experienced a sudden shock, or a shock from health problems. They are sending the body  to the forensic institute to investigate the exact cause of death. The embassy has been informed, and will be kept up-to-date.
