On receiving notification at 01:30 am, Police Lieutenant Colonel Norawit Julawanit dispatched a team to investigate.

At the supermarket police found an English national by the name of Angus [45] being held by the staff, together with the evidence comprising one bunch of imported red grapes to the value of 91.50 baht. Mr. Angus was taken to the Pattaya police station for further questioning.

Mr. Danai Mungpunglang, [32] , the manager of the supermarket said the accused walked into the shop and wandered around as if he was looking for some items. Unexpectedly, he grabbed a bag of grapes and put them in a plastic bag which he had with him, and walked out of the shop without paying. Mr. Danai followed him and asked to see inside the bag and found the evidence.

Mr. Angus confessed to the crime and told police he had no money with him at the time because a Thai lady had taken it all. However, he added that he had stolen items from the supermarket several times before.

He will now be charged with nighttime theft which, under Thai law, carries a different punishment to theft occurring during the daytime.
