Sriracha 7th  July 201[Pattaya Daily News] It has been reported that the price of eggs is still on the rise, causing food venders in the Sriracha Municipal Market to complain. They are asking that the government intervene in order to take control of the situation, before they are forced to increase their prices of fried eggs and omelets selling in general food shops in Sriracha.

The small restaurant owner in the market, Pa Lek revealed that the food sellers have to carry the burden of rising prices of eggs as they continue to cook food for customers with a regular price of 5 baht per one fried egg. Previously she bought 30 eggs for 62 baht before it went up to 88 baht and is still on the rise. If the government does not resolve this problem, all sellers in the market will have to increase the price of an egg to 7-8 baht causing higher expenditure for customers.

Chicken Feeder Association President Mrs. Chaweewan Khampha revealed that announcements by the Egg Development Policy Committee to manage the egg problem will be as follows,

1. Immediate measures will be taken to decrease the price of eggs, extend the breeder hen’s age, and decrease egg export.
2. Send the committee to study the system to resolve the egg problem management for 60 days and
3. Long term policy adjustment in the purchase of breeding hens through fixed suppliers.

Mrs. Khampha thought that the above policies were not the correct way to resolve the problem. She did not agree in decreasing exports that may result in the overrun of the quantity of eggs in the market following which, will create suffering for the chicken feeders. The right way to do this is to let the chicken farmers source the breeder hen themselves and stop the rule of having to buy from the 9 fixed suppliers. The costs for the farmer will then be lower. The main problems about eggs in her opinion were the quality of the breeder hens and the high cost in feed for the chickens.

The government should try to support the farmers by lowering their costs as the proportion is at present 60-70%.
