Edible “Rhinoceros Mushrooms” May Bring Luck

Park Roonpreung villagers discovered unusual giant mushrooms and believed that it would give them luck, considering that the mushrooms have already given them a delicious meal.

Pattaya, 12th March 2011 [Pattaya Daily News]: Journalists were informed by the villagers that they had found a giant mushroom. Villagers were from Park Roongreung village, Soi Khao Noi, Moo 10, Tambon Nong Prue, Banglamung, Chonburi. The biggest mushroom has dimensions of 1 foot wide at the base and 26 cm in size, being surrounded by 26 smaller mushroom flowers.

When asked, 17-year-old Ms. Kanoknat Sewisit, the discoverer of these mushroom, said that she found them on her way out to the courtyard behind the village. She saw dozens of flowers and mushrooms clattered in groups. Immediately she called her relatives and neighbours in the area to come and see such unusual mushrooms. The mushrooms were named “Hed-Teenrad”, which was Thai meaning “Rhinoceros Mushroom”. Mushrooms were edible.

Ms. Kanoknat distributed these mushrooms to her relatives, who enjoyed cooking them as their ingredients. The relatives believed that the numbers of mushroom distributed to them would be their responding lucky number for gambling.
