Drunken Elderly Norwegian Drowns Off Jomtien Beach

An Elderly Norwegian man who was drunk whilst celebrating Songkran festival with his Thai wife decided to go swimming in the sea late at night and drowned.

PATTAYA – April 13, 2014 [Pattaya Daily News]; at 4.20 a.m.; Pol.Lt.Col. Anuchet Kartsomboon (Investigation officer of Pattaya city police station, Dong Tarn curve sub-branch, Chonburi province) was notified that a foreign tourist had drowned. The incident occurred near the volleyball court on Jomtien beach before Soi Jomtien 9, Moo12, Tambon Nong Prue, Amphur Banglamung, Chonburi province, so he rushed to inspect at scene together with the rescuers of Sawang Boriboon Tharmma Satharn Foundation, Pattaya city.

At the incident the officers found the body of a foreign man named Mr Holken, aged 61, Norwegian nationality. Mr Holken’s wife and relatives tried to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on him before he was sent to the emergency room at Bangkok-Pattaya hospital by the rescuers but was confirmed dead at the hospital.

Upon questioning his wife and relatives they told police that Mr. Holken had come to celebrate Songkran festival with his Thai wife and relatives at the beach but after he became very drunk he and his wife decided to go swimming but his wife sat on the buoyancy and Mr. Holken swam in the sea where it was about waist deep but due to his drunken state he drowned.

The police assumed that the cause of his death was due to him being intoxicated whilst swimming. Therefore, the police made a record for evidence and informed the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Thailand.
