Pattaya, 22 November 2010, [Pattaya Daily News]: A drunk hit-and-run driver collided with a motorbike in the early hours of this morning, causing the young motorcyclist extensive injuries. Police were alerted and managed to identify the offending vehicle and gave chase.

Pol.Mjr. Suppharerk Uphrai, Pattaya Police Investigator, was notified at 1am, Nov22, that a red Isuzu pickup, driven by a Thai driver had hit and seriously injured a young motorcyclist in Soi Korphai, off Thepprasit Road, subsequently driving off without reporting the incident. A police team was sent to the incident scene and fortunately managed to spy the offending pickup driving up Sukhumvit Road, before it escaped and sped after it.

The red Isuzu pickup was finally caught up to outside McDonald’s, Central Pattaya. In the vehicle were four people and the front of the pickup was found to be damaged. A search of the vehicle revealed a Llama .32mm pistol hidden in the glove compartment, along with a magazine containing 6 bullets and several bottles of beer, some of which had been opened, close to the driver’s seat. The driver, Mr. Chaiya Kimsor [33] from Prachenburi, who was severely intoxicated, protested that the gun belonged to his father and was registered in his name. Mr. Chaiya said he owned a sea food restaurant on Phratumnuk Hill, and had been drinking with his brother and friends after work. Before the incident, he said he had been driving the pickup to drop off the friends at home. However, on the way, he had hit a motorbike and being drunk had fled the scene.

Following the brief questioning, the suspect was taken to the police station and charged with drunk driving, causing an accident and then fleeing the scene without reporting the incident, as well as having in his possession an unauthorised firearm and carrying it into a public place.
