Arriving at the scene, police discovered three damaged rescue vehicles of Siltharm Baan Beung that had been also hit by the pickup truck. The three vehicles still had their emergency lights on. Each vehicle was severely damaged in the front and back ends.

Nearby was the pickup truck involved in the collisions, a black Isuzu Dmax. The SUV truck’s front end was severely damaged. The driver of the truck was identified as Mr. Sutthiphong Seubmart age 27, who works for a company in the Pluak Daeng industrial estate in Rayong province.

Mr. Sutthiphong was still drunk, along with his passengers in the truck, so the men were detained by police for questioning. The consultant of the volunteer rescuers, Mr. Nattakit Teawprasert, described to police what happened. He said that there had been a minor accident when a rescue car collided with a motorbike. There were only minor injuries, so rescue workers were treating the victims at the scene.

Meanwhile, 3 rescue cars had turned on their emergency lights to slow approaching traffic. Then the volunteer rescuer Mr. Therdsak stood nearby on the road to direct cars past the accident scene. However the speeding pickup truck driven by Mr. Sutthiphong collided violently with Mr. Therdsak and instantly killed him. The pickup truck then rammed into the three parked rescue cars. No other rescue officers were injured.

The pickup driver Mr. Sutthiphong suffered minor injuries, and he was restrained by the rescue officers for the police to investigate.

Speaking of the victim, Mr. Nattakit said that Mr. Therdsak was a new volunteer who started working only 6 months ago. He was a very diligent worker, and would go out to help for every incident, and everyone loved him.

His friends are heartbroken, and said this should not have happened to a nice man like Mr. Therdsak. He was always caring and wanting to assist other people very much. He never got tired or discouraged about helping others as much as he could.

But Mr. Therdsak finally was a victim of the drunken driver who drove carelessly and killed him. So Mr. Nattakit would like the police to prosecute the drunken driver according to the law as much as possible.

During questioning by police, the pickup driver Mr. Sutthiphong said he and his companions had gotten drunk at a New Year’s company party in the Pluak Daeng industrial estate.

While returning back home, Mr. Sutthhiphong was driving at a high speed when he approached the accident scene with the rescue cars. Mr. Sutthiphong said he did not see Mr. Therdsak standing on the road to direct traffic. So he hit him with his truck and then collided with the rescue cars.

Rescue officers transported the body of Mr. Therdsak to Laem Chabang hospital to perform an autopsy.

Police restrained Mr. Sutthiphong to let the doctor check for alcohol content in his blood level. They will investigate again to prosecute him according to the law.
