A rescue team and a fire truck rushed to the scene at the bypass road No. 7 near the Nong Kwae bridge where they found an Isuzu 6-wheel truck, no. 97-172, from the Daily News newspaper, with its front section on fire. The fire-fighters dowsed the flames, revealing extensive damage. The driver, Mr. Preecha Saehor (26) residing at 119, Moo. 13, Nareuk, Panusnikom, had managed to get out of the truck and suffered a minor wound to his mouth. He was taken to Laem Chabang hospital.

300 meters away an 18-wheel trailer, No. 70-2090 Bangkok, of Sri Thai Group Enterprise company, was parked by the roadside. The tail lights and rear right side were damaged. Fortunately its cargo of hazardous hydrocarbons remained intact. The driver, Mr. U-dom Martwiset [41], residing at 134 Moo 8, Nad, Udonthani, was not injured.

Mr. Udom said he was driving his vehicle from Rayong to Bangkok in the left lane at normal speed when he was suddenly hit in the rear by the newspaper truck. He quickly parked and rushed to help Mr. Preecha out of the truck which had caught fire.

Mr. Preecha told officials that he failed to see the chemical truck as he reached the top of a hill and couldn’t stop in time.

Both drivers realized that the accident could have been far more serious and that luck was with them that night.
