UBON RATCHATHANI – December 24, 2012: [Pattaya Daily News]: An early-morning report of a man found lying on the roadside tied up was received by the police officers of Muang Ubon Ratchathani police station.

A good citizen found the man, who had been beaten and tied, and was wearing just a pair of shorts. The man told police his name was Mr. Ekapan, age 21, but he didn’t want to reveal his surname. The victim was later sent to Mahavachiralongkorn hospital.

Mr. Ekapan told police that on December 23 at about 8 p.m., he was driving his red Honda sedan on the road. Suddenly he saw a girl wearing thin-strap top, who was standing and waving for help next to her car parked on the side of the road.

When he got out of his car, she told him that her car was broken. So he began checking out her car for her. Then 3 men who were hiding at the roadside emerged. They pointed a gun at him, and peeled his clothes off, and then ripped up his clothes. The thieves then tied him up, and left him lying there and drove away in the two vehicles.

Mr. Ekapan was lying on the road overnight until the next morning, when a good citizen saw him and provided assistance. However, the police later recovered Mr. Ekapan’s stolen car, because the driver had tried to drive the car through a police checkpoint .

The checkpoint was about 7 km from where Mr. Ekapan had been robbed. So the police chased the fleeing car, until the driver lost control and crashed into the roadside shrubbery. The driver fled the scene and escaped capture. The police will follow up to investigate to arrest the gang of robbers as soon as possible.

Local residents at the scene told police that robberies usually occurred along that stretch of road because it was dark and lonely. Cars also have had rocks thrown at them, and bicyclists have been assaulted and robbed, they said.
