Pattaya – On 9 February 2008, Pattaya Inspector (Dongtan Branch), Police Lieutenant General Apimook Amnatmunkong was informed of a horrendous accident, involving a fatality, on Sukhumvit Road, near the Pattaya city limits. A car had collided with a motorbike and then crashed into the large photo sign of the King. The motorbike rider died immediately.

Police, along with Sawang Boriboon Rescue, rushed to the sign, which is on Sukhumvit Road, Moo 12, Nongprue, Chonburi. Fifty meters beyond the Pattaya City sign, in Sattahip, the 500 cm. tall photo sign of the king, normally situated in the middle of the road, was badly damaged. A smashed up Yamaha motorbike, license no. Ngor-326 Sattahip was wedged to the sign. The body of Mr. Surapong Petsaidee (23), address 451/20 Moo 12, Nongprue, Banglamung, Chonburi, was lying face up on the road. He had sustained fractures to his head, arms and legs. Family members were crying in despair.

On the opposite side of the road, about one hundred meters from the deceased motorbike rider, police found a badly damaged bronze Honda Civic automobile, license no. 646 Chonburi. Its roof was complete sheared off. Standing beside the destroyed car was Mr. Pornchai Ratsopa (28), address 84 Moo 4, Tapsai, Pong Nam Ron, Chantaburi. Mr. Pornchai is a Thai boxer and is also known as “Sansak Singmanusak.” Mr. Pornchai only sustained minor injuries, which were a few scratches on his face caused by broken window glass. He was wearing three Buddha images, as well as, a special image of a famous monk, around his neck. He credited these images with saving his life. There were also several Buddha images attached in front of the driver and passenger seats of his car.

Mr. Pornchai (Sansak) told authorities that he was driving from Chonburi to Sattahip to visit his family. As he was approaching the area of the U-turn point in front of the entrance to Sirinda Village, driving between 100 and 120 km/hour, he intended to continue going straight. However, he noticed Mr. Surapong (the victim) riding his motorbike to cross the road at the intersection. Mr. Pornchai was driving too fast to stop in time and honked his horn to warn Mr. Surapong that he was approaching. Unfortunately, Mr. Surapong tried to speed across the road and Mr. Pornchai crashed into the motorbike. His car, then, went through the metal frame under the photo sign of the King and jumped straight across the road, about one hundred meters from the sign.

The driver, Mr. Pornchai, said, “I couldn’t believe how lucky I was. I guess it was because I was trying to stay calm and composed. Also, I think the Buddha images were helping me.”

Police took Mr. Pornchai to the police station for further investigation. He will be charged with damaging public property.
