Bangkok, 5th of December 2009 [Pattaya Daily News]: Due to the recent announcement of an organised mass protest by the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), the Thai Deputy Prime Minister has advised the government to speedily introduce a new crowd control law that is in the proposal stage.

Mr Kachornprasart has stated that “Amid the social divisiveness, the country’s situation is now worrying,” further adding that the UDD “have rights to stage the rally but they have to abide by laws.”

The Deputy PM believed that once the crowd control legislation is passed the ability of police and the military to efficiently and effectively control public gatherings will be significantly improved. The Thai cabinet in early October gave preliminary approval on the proposed crowd control bill, which was put forward by the Royal Thai Police Office.

The protest that was scheduled to commence on the 10th of December by the UDD party has been temporarily postponed, after Thaksin Shinawatra, the parties’ figurehead, advised that they not attempt to disrupt the celebrations surrounding the Kings Birthday.
