Deputy Pm Suthep Concerned Over Southern Provinces Security

BANGKOK, May 27 - Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban expressed concern Wednesday over the situation in the southern provinces after coordinated series of bombs, grenades and arson fires in the southern province of Yala early Wednesday, and stepped up security in the nearby provinces of Songkhla and Narathiwat in response to the incidents.

Three bombings and three arson incidents occurred in several locations in Yala causing damage but no casualties.

Mr. Suthep said he would visit the southern provinces on Thursday and was scheduled to meet with officials of the Southern Border Provinces Administration Center (SBPAC).

The deputy prime minister said he would also tell the officials and private sector to understand that the government had plan and sincerely intend to resolve the problems in the southern region particularly to raise the living condition of the people in the south.

He would also visit local residents and give moral support to military, police and civil servants working in the provinces.

Mr. Suthep planned to stay overnight in Pattani.

Meanwhile, Songkhla Provincial Police had focused on security measures in four districts adjacent to the three southernmost province of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat.

Road checkpoints were set up to inspect all vehicles in Chana, Thepha, Saba Yoi and Na Thawi districts, all adjacent to the three restive provinces.

Checkpoints were also established at town centres and business districts, and officials were sent to inspect the incident sites and gather information regarding the suspected insurgents believed to be behind the attacks in Yala.

In Narathiwat, security officials were on high alert after a series of attacks on May 19 and 25. Checkpoints were set up on main roads heading to the provincial town to prevent further incidents. (TNA)
