Chatchai Phromlert, director-general of the department, said road safety measures will be strictly implemented during the long Songkran holiday from April 11 to 17. An exodus of people is likely from Bangkok to the provinces.

The measures will include improved cooperation between central and local road accident response centres and road maintenance units. There will also be strict control of vehicles including passenger buses and vans, the operation of roadside checkpoints to promote road safety, rapid deployment of medical and rescue personnel in the event of accidents. The push also comprises enforcement of traffic rules, strict control on the sale of alcoholic beverages and an alcohol ban at water festival venues during the Songkran festival.
ML Panadda Diskul, deputy permanent secretary for interior, said the majority of road accidents involved motorcyclists and almost half the drivers in the accidents were drunk.

Udomsilp Srisaengnam, adviser to the Thai Health Promotion Foundation, said drinking caused accidents and damage to personal property during Songkran and it also tarnished the image of the festival.

Songkran Phakchokdee, director of the Stop Drink Network, said authorities have launched a campaign against alcoholic drinks being consumed at water festival venues nationwide.

According to the director, a survey of 6,700 people nationwide last year found that 85% of respondents supported an alcohol ban at Songkran festival venues and 79% did not want festival organisers to be sponsored by alcoholic beverage firms.

Orada Kerdhong, general manager of the CentralWorld shopping centre, said participants in the water festival at the shopping centre will be prohibited from bringing alcoholic drinks into the compound of the festival.
