Democrat Party Sweeps City And District Seats

The opposition Democrat Party had a decided edge in sets won over the Thai Rak Thai Party on Monday.

   Bangkok – According to the Permanent Secretary for the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) Nathanon Thavisin, the Democrat Party won a landslide victory in Sunday’s polls for the Bangkok Metropolitan Council and District Council throughout the capital.

   According to Khunying Nathanon, in the City Council vote, the Democrat Party secured 35 of the total 57 seats (61%) while the Thai Rak Thai (TRT) Party came in a distant second securing a mere 18 seats (32%). The remaining four seats went to other independent candidates.

   The Democrat Party also enjoyed great success in the District Council election; they won an even larger proportion of seats than in the previous election. The Party won 176 of a possible 255 seats (69%), while the TRT Party won only 71 seats (28%). Eight  seats went to independent candidates, the City Clerk revealed.

   Khunying Nathanon said that the Nong Jok District had the highest proportion of eligible voters turn out at 51.11%.

   The City Council polls saw 41.94% of the city’s electorate turn out for the election, while the District Council election had a turn out slightly higher at 42.7%.

   The polls have barely closed and already the city government has had complaints and accusations regarding electoral fraud or irregularities, according to the City Clerk.

   One such petition deals with a Democrat Party candidate for the District Council from Samphanthawong District who was physically assaulted. Mr. Kitti was monitoring polling at a constituency when three men approached him. The men began to punch him about his mouth and face then fled the scene. Mr. Kitti was injured and taken for treatment at a nearby hospital.
