Bangkok, the 16th of September 2010: Mr. Chumphon, MP for the southern province of Surat Thani, was read the Supreme Court verdict on Thursday, which included a meagre fine of Bt,4,000 along with a suspended two-month prison sentence and mandatory five-year ban from politics.

The courts verdict came as the National Anti-Corruption Commission in November 2009 filed the case against Mr. Chumphon, citing that he had intentionally submitted false asset statements aimed at concealing approximately Bt200 million in debt. The commission claims that Mr. Chumphon concealed the debt a total of 13 times since 1997.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva as the leader of the Democrat Party conceded that the Supreme Courts ruling and the subsequent ban of MP Chumphon from politics is a blow to the party and its ability to gather votes in parliament.

Democrat Party members are now attempting to contact the banned MP who has been unavailable for comment since the announcement of the verdict.
