Daniel Smith‘s the tragic cause of his death…

Anna Nicole Smith‘s 20-year-old son died from the accidental effect of methadone and two antidepressant drugs interacting in his system, according to a prominent American pathologist who conducted a private autopsy.

The low levels of the three drugs detected by toxicology tests indicated Daniel Smith died “a tragic, accidental, drug-related death,” told Dr. Cyril Wecht.

She hired Wecht, a forensic pathologist who gained fame as a consultant on celebrity cases including Elvis Presley‘s death, to end speculation about her son‘s death.

Wecht said Zoloft, Lexapro and methadone had a lethal “cumulative effect on the central nervous system” that ultimately stopped Smith‘s heart — a “classical” death resulting from a combination of drugs without an overdose of any one.

Wecht rejected the notion that the younger Smith‘s death was a suicide: “Absolutely not.”

“Classically, you take one drug to overdose,” Wecht said. “You don‘t need three drugs.”

Rather, Wecht said, Daniel Smith‘s death was “a tragic, accidental drug-related death.”

Smith had reportedly been suffering depression related to a breakup with a girlfriend when he went to visit his mother and newborn half-sister in Nassau. Zoloft and Lexapro, which a U.S. doctor had prescribed, are antidepressants commonly used to treat anxiety and panic disorders.

Howard K. Stern, Anna Nicole Smith‘s attorney and newly proclaimed father of her newborn daughter, told that the younger Smith spoke of being tired the night before his death.

“At one point, Daniel said to me, ‘How come I‘m so tired?‘ ” Stern said. “And in hindsight, I wish that I had seen that as some sort of a signal and seen that something wasn‘t right.”

Daniel died in his mother‘s hospital room Sept. 10, while visiting her in the Bahamas three days after she gave birth to a baby girl named Dannielynne Hope.

Smith‘s body on Wednesday remained at a Bahamas funeral home hired by the family.
