Cruise Vessel with 80 Russians on Fire in Sattahip

A boat carrying 80 Russian tourists caught fire near Bang Saray beach in Sattahip. The holiday makers were stuck onboard and later rescued. No one was injured.

Pattaya, August 3, 2011 [Pattaya Daily News]; Pattaya Sea Rescue was informed of a fire on a cruise boat carrying many tourists. The RSR and Swangboriboon Rescue team rushed to the scene.

On arrival, the rescue team found the 150-seat vessel named Asa carring more than 80 male and female Russian tourists adrift three nautical miles from the shore. There was smoke from the engine room. The two engines and electrical wire were damaged by fire.

Mr Somrak Jankreau, 39, the captain said that he took the Russians on a squid fishing cruise and a party onboard in Bang Saray bay. While cruising back to Balihai pier, smoke was detected from the engine room. An explosion was heard and the engine room was on fire. It took the crew took more than ten minutes to extinguish the flames. Since the boat had suffered engine failure Captain Somsak informed Pattaya Sea Rescue.
Later the rescue team towed the vessel to Balihai pier and transferred the tourists to safety.
