Controversial Political Leaders Battle In Court

A libel trial involving a leader of the Red Shirts party began in a Bangkok court. The former fugitive Mr. Arisman Pongruangrong is accused of libeling former prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva. Mr. Arisman made speeches in 2009 describing Mr. Abhisit as a corrupt leader who ordered soldiers to kill people.

BANGKOK – October 17, 2012 [Pattaya Daily News] : A libel trial involving a leader of the Red Shirts political faction took place at the judge’s room 803 at the criminal court on Ratchadaphisek Rd.
Testifying in his defense was Mr. Arisman Pongruangrong, or Kee, of the United Front of Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD). The court had convened to hear the initial testimony of the defendant Mr. Arisman.

The libel lawsuit against Mr. Arisman had been filed by the plaintiff, the former prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, head of the Democratic Party. Mr. Abhisit is accusing the defendant with a charge of defamation by advertising, following the criminal law codes 326, 328 and 332.

According to the plaintiff’s accusation, between October 11-17 in 2009, the defendant Mr. Arisman continually broadcast 24 hours a day, through speeches on the People Channel, that the plaintiff and the plaintiff’s government were corrupted.

Mr. Arisman further stated that the plaintiff was a cold-blooded person who commanded soldiers to use war weapons to kill people.

Mr. Arisman also said the plaintiff was the restrainer in the filing of the case in the Supreme Court with the King to decriminalize Pol. Lt. Col. Thaksin Shinawatra, the former prime minister.

The plaintiff Mr. Abhisit countered that the defamatory statements by Mr. Arisman were all lies that had damaged the plaintiff and spoiled his reputation, resulting in the plaintiff being hated. The lawsuit alleges that these incidents of defamation occurred at the platform of the Democracy Monument, Ratchdamnern Klang Rd, Boworniwes, Phra Nakorn; and in front of the Government House, Pissanuloke Rd. Dusit, Dusit; and throughout the entire Kingdom.

Mr. Arisman said he also came to testify about the day that the Coup occurred in 2003. That later resulting in the red shirt people gathering and asking Mr. Abhisit, who became prime minister in 2009, to resign and to dissolve the parliament and arrange an honest general election. The protestors said the Coup had resulted in a military government full of corrupt self-serving manipulators engaged in political cake-sharing.
