Laem Chabang, 18 November, 2010, [Pattaya Daily News]: Sriracha Administration has issued warnings that floating lights, i.e. candles inside inflammable cloth or rice paper covers, must not be used during this year’s Loy Krathong Festival in the vicinity of Laem Chabang oil refineries and gas processing plants or nearby factories for fear of an explosion.

Mr. Phusit Jamsri, Laem Chabang Corporation Deputy Clerk, announced to the press that Sriracha Administration had received several letters on behalf of officials at the Laem Chabang oil refineries and gas processing plants that they are extremely concerned about the continued use of aerial lights close to their plants during the Loy Krathong Celebration as there is apparently a higher risk of explosions this year should one of these lights fall among combustible materials. Mr. Phusit also told press that warnings had been issued to the relevant village community heads not to allow their charges to float the aerial lights near the plants during the festival.

Mr. Phusit continued that while they understood that most people will attend the festivities and be absent from their homes, winter is upon us and there is a strong likelihood of high winds and, in the event of any of the aforementioned facilities catching fire, it would be extremely difficult to extinguish the flames.

The Laem Chabang Corporation has also apparently consulted the police in an attempt to determine the exact zones of vulnerability.
