Chon-Buri, the 22nd of August 2010: Mr. Eimar David Gilardo Artega [23], a Colombian national, was arrested last Wednesday, along with three of his compatriots, for the robbery of over 20 residences in the Pattaya City area, including that of a local police Lieutenant Colonel.

On the 19th of August (Thursday) while the four offenders were being transported to appear at the Pattaya District Court, Mr. Artega managed to free himself from his restraints before escaping into nearby bushland. Following a short case, officers shot Mr. Artega in the shoulder and hip in a bid to prevent his escape. The injured victim was then detained again and sent to the Banglamung Hospital for treatment (later transferred to the Chon-Buri Hospital).

Mr. Artega, having undergone minor surgery, remained in hospital, under guard and restrained to his bed, while he recovered from his injuries. However, on Sunday the 22nd of August at approximately 5:30pm, Mr. Artega once again relieved himself of the restraints, escaping the hospital while his police guards were absent.

Captain Prat Mauai (Laem Chabang Police Investigator) in cooperation with the Chon-Buri Gendarme Radio Center, who gave details of the Mr. Artega’s appearance and injuries, managed to capture Mr. Artega as he was attempting to flee the area on a local motorbike taxi. He was rearrested without incident and sent back to the Chon-Buri Hospital for further treatment.

Suffering from two gunshot wounds to his shoulder and hip, Mr. Artega was also fitted with a urinary drainage bag following his surgery and stated that he had been attempting to reach Pattaya in order to meet up with a friend.

Following his release from hospital Mr. Artega is expected to be detained in police remand, with the other three offenders, awaiting further judicial proceedings.
