Collagen: What is it and Does it Work?

Collagen is a fibrous protein of the connective tissues. It supports the cells of the body including hair, skin, nails, bone, muscles etc. It helps in maintaining the skins elasticity making it appear smooth, tight and supple. It is also crucial for bone health, strengthens blood vessels and cartilage. With growing old, the production of collagen slows down which causes the skin to lose its youthful elasticity hence the problems of wrinkles. Reduction of collagen can also cause joint pain.

Collagen has become one of the most talked about substance which is often regarded as one of the best solutions to battle the aging process and is used in a wide range of medical industries. Whether they work or not is still a debatable question.

Collagen comes in the form of pills, injections or liquid promising to compensate the age related reduction by replenishing the level of collagen in the body, promising to slow down the aging process. This anti aging supplement is derived from animal tissue like cows, chicken or pigs, but whether it is effective or not has yet to be proven.

When used for counteracting the effects on aging of the skin, may studies claim that it does not produce the desired results, certain substances like Keratin and nano-lipobell can help to stimulate collagen production and has shown to be more efficient in reducing wrinkles.

However, although collagen studies claim not to have the desired result on wrinkles, it has been found to benefit people with arthritis and degenerative arthritis.  It has been reported, that those taking collagen supplements have had a significant reduction in joint pain with increased mobility. The supplements have been found to be very effective in reducing inflammation associated with rheumatoid arthritis and strengthening blood vessels thereby improving circulation.

So do collagen supplements work only for geriatric illnesses or are they equally effective for skin care?  Most of the experts believe that collagen supplements are not effective for skin care but rather the anti aging skin care products  that contain substances like Keratin which stimulates the body’s natural production of collagen.
For some age related diseases however, like arthritis and osteoarthritis, collagen can help alleviate the symptoms, but as they are manufactured from animals, it can contain yeast, shellfish, wheat, gluten and soy etc. adequate care should be taken by people having allergies.  Always consult an expert health care practitioner before taking any kind of medication or supplements and ask about side effects.
