PATTAYA – April 23, 2013 [Pattaya Daily News]; in the late night hours, a sweep was conducted of Pattaya’s main streets to remove beggars and vagrants.

Coordinating to conduct the sweep were officers of the social welfare division, Pattaya, Chonburi province, together with the related organizations such as Pattaya municipal, police of Pattaya police station, Pattaya tourism police, immigration police of Chonburi province and volunteer police.

Together they subdued and arrested the beggar gangs and vagrant people all over Pattaya, including the Pattaya beach-Walking Street road-central Pattaya-south Pattaya road-the markets-the Sois and the entertainment centers and business areas.

Officials were responding to complaints from the foreign tourists that there were a lot of Thai and foreign beggars and vagrant people in Pattaya, who always asked for money from the tourists to buy liquor to drink, and then they got drunk and made trouble, which destroyed the image of the tourism of Pattaya so much.

Even though the police officers always strictly arrested them, the officers still found that the beggar gangs and the vagrant people would come back to ask for money from the tourists, and hang out on the roads and in the public places in Pattaya.

The social welfare division and the related organization had decentralized forces to subdue and arrest the defendants, who are the vagrant people that stay and sleep overnight on Pattaya beach, which consisted of male and female defendants and including the handicapped people.

Altogether the police detained more than 10 people. The defendants included beggars arrested in the areas of the entertainment center in Walking Street road, in the central Pattaya market, and Chaimongkhol temple market in south Pattaya. Of the 10 people arrested in the sweep, officers discovered that most of the defendants had previously been arrested before.

Initially, the police inspected their identity cards in order to analyze whether they are Thai people or foreign people, then restrained all the defendants to Meuang Pattaya to check for their history, and to divide them according to male and female defendants, then sent all of the defendants to the house of homeless people in Nonthaburi province, in order for the officers to contact their relatives to pick them up to go back home.

But if anyone doesn’t have relatives, then the officers will arrange for a place for them to stay and will train them for jobs, to prevent them from being beggars or vagrant people in Pattaya again.
