The event was officially opened by Mr. Pracha Tae-rat, Mayor of Chonburi province and his committee members. Mr. Pracha announced to the crowd that the event is part of the celebration of the rice harvest and the festival is not only meant to be fun but also to help preserve the Thai tradition of buffalo racing as well as maintain the number of the animals involved in Thai agriculture.

By tradition the races are held on 14th full moon night of the 11th lunar month. This complicated calculation put the event for this year on 13th October. The event took place in the courtyard in front of Chonburi City Hall with similar races also being held in Ban Beung and Nong Yai districts in the province.

The crowds, which included both locals and tourists enjoyed the fair which offered Thai food stalls and handicrafts, snacks and sweets. There were also rides for children, concerts of folk music and comic performances by clowns. They could also join in the contests for slingshot-shooting and for climbing an oily pole.

Other activities included a review of decorated water buffalo and the inevitable beauty contest where the prize was the honour of being declared Miss Buffalo, although perhaps Miss Farmer Beauty Queen would be a more preferable title. Activities for the contest had begun the night before with 118 beauties from the different districts of Chonburi. By the night of the 13th these had been reduced to a final 13 who took part in a parade of decorated carts.

The title of Miss Farmer Beauty Queen 2008 went to Miss Sasima Prakobsab, the representative of Sriracha Tiger Zoo. The mass media popular vote went to Miss Poomarat Thongtae.
