Button In Awe of Red Bulls Speed as Barcelona Hots Up

McLaren Formula One driver Jenson Button revealed his surprise at the inherent speed coming out of the Red Bull manufacturer’s garage, whilst in testing for the upcoming Barcelona Grand Prix. Button and teammate Hamilton have both voiced concerns over their McLaren setups for the impending grand prix despite both finishing yesterdays testing with impressive lap times.

Barcelona, the 8th of May 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: In an unpredictable season, Button has achieved a remarkable 2 wins from the first 4 races, to shoot to the top of the championships standings in defence of last years title. After switching from the now defunct Brawn team with which he won the drivers title last year, critics labelled him a one-time champion, some branding him an ‘average driver given an exceptional car.’ If that is the case then Button has certainly set out to defy the critics with his brilliant performances in the first four races of the 2010 season.

Buttons re-ignited defence of the title, after a slow start, has forced Formula One legend Sir Jackie Stewart to retract his statement that Button would be overwhelmed by the technical abilities of his younger compatriot and teammate Lewis Hamilton. The three-time world champion now believes Button can retain the title “provided he can keep driving the way he is”.

Facing some pretty torrid criticism over the last decade Button has begun to treat both positive and negative criticism with a similar nonchalant tactic, shrugging off Jackie’s comments respectively by stating, “It is nice hearing positive comments from someone like Jackie. I have got a lot of respect for the guy and he has obviously achieved so much in F1 but I don’t think it changes how you feel about yourself and how you feel you are doing.”

In preparation for this years Spanish Grand Prix, where over 90,000 Formula One fans are expected to be in attendance, Button and teammate Lewis Hamilton are far from happy with their individual cars setup whilst in adoration of the fellow Red Bull outfits speed. “To be honest, I think we have a bit of work to do. For some reason we can’t get the car working and it’s not just myself, it’s both sides of the garage,” Button stated. “The Red Bulls look quick, whatever fuel they were running, which is a shame. It’s horrible to say but I think they might be untouchable this weekend.”

Red Bull have claimed pole in all four races so far this year and are overwhelming favourites to do so again this afternoon. Despite the raft of upgrades that every team has come with, even their own drivers admit the weather is the team’s major enemy.

Fan favourite Fernando Alonso will be hoping he can make an impact at his home grand prix with his radically altered Ferrari. The prancing horse have introduced new front and rear wings, a new diffuser, new barge boards, their version of McLaren’s ‘F-duct’ aerodynamic aid, which improves top speed, and engine changes aimed at improving reliability.
