Pattaya, the 27th of January 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: At approximately 1:00pm, police Lieutenant Colonel Anan Thammachaikul (Pattaya Police Investigator) received a report stating that a foreign man had been found dead on the floor of his room at the Liver Mansion, Beach Road, Soi 4 in South Pattaya. Lt. Col. Thammachaikul and police Lieutenant Colonel Chanaphat Nualak (Pattaya Police Deputy Superintendent) along with a doctor from the Banglamung Hospital and officers from the Sawang Boriboon Foundation rushed to the scene to investigate.

At the scene, the 4-storey Liver Mansion apartment block, police discovered the deceased body of Mr. John Garbutt [52] a British national. Mr. Garbutt was lying on the floor of the bathroom naked, with his white jeans pulled down to the knees. A deep laceration was evident on his head that had bled profusely onto the surrounding floor. The doctor present estimated that Mr.  Garbutt had been dead for approximately 12 hours, due to his complexion and the smell that was evident in the apartment.

Investigations revealed that there was blood on some parts of the walls, floor and bed of the apartment, however; there were no other signs of a struggle or fight present. Mrs Sompoch Ngaosri [35] the housekeeper who discovered the deceased body, informed police that she had been cleaning the buildings rooms, floor by floor, when she encountered a suspicious smell in the vicinity of Mr. Garbutt’s room. She explained that in conjunction with the smell emanating from the room there had been a small amount of blood coming from under the door to the apartment. Mrs. Ngaosri subsequently unlocked the door and discovered what had happened, contacting police immediately.

Police Lt. Col. Nualak was reluctant to propose the cause of death, due to the suspicious circumstances surrounding the deceased mans condition and the state of his room. It is known however that Mr. Garbutt had lived in Pattaya for the last 7 years, owning a Bar Beer. It is alleged that he drank heavily and was suffering from some form of congenital disease. Mr. Garbutt’s body has been sent for autopsy to determine the actual cause of death and the English embassy will be informed shortly.
