Brit Murders American Wife And Daughter In The Us

A BRITISH computer programmer, Neil Entwistle, 29 ,who emigrated to the USA was yesterday, June 26, convicted in Middlesex County Superior Court, Woburn, Massachusetts, of killing his American wife and 9-month-old baby daughter. After deliberating for 13 hours the jury finally came up with the guilty verdict and Entwistle was charged on two counts of first degree murder and sentenced to life imprisonment without the option of parole.

Entwistle, originally from Worksop, Nottinghamshire, met his American wife while they were both at studying York University in the UK, and gave the impression of having an idyllic, “loving and nourishing” marriage, when in fact Entwhistle was leading a double life. Jurors heard how Entwistle had been surfing Internet sex sites and escort agencies offering “sexual services and joined an internet adult dating service. He was apparently intent on living the life of a swinger. On January 4, 2006, he had apparently sent an email to a woman on one of the sites declaring: “I am currently in a relationship, but I would like a bit more fun in the bedroom.”

Entwistle married Rachel on August 10, 2003, in Plymouth, Massachusetts, USA. His defence lawyer declared that “They were a loving couple and devoted to each other. Rachel and Neil were partners. They were soul mates.”

As to the trial itself, according to the prosecution evidence, on January 20, 2006, Entwhistle borrowed a .22-calibre Colt revolver from his father-in-law’s house in Carver, Massachusetts and shot Rachel and their daughter, Lillian, at point-blank range in their rented Massachusetts house in Hopkinton, months after moving across the Atlantic and 10 days after they had moved into their new house. The bodies of his 27-year-old wife and 9-month-old daughter, however, were not found until January 22. An autopsy indicated that the mother had died of a gunshot wound to the forehead and the baby of a gunshot through the chest. Their bodies were concealed under a comforter, the mother still cradling the baby.

Entwistle’s lawyer claimed Rachel had shot Lillian and herself and that he returned the gun to her parents’ house about 100km away to protect her honour.

After committing the murder, Entwhistle supposedly contemplated suicide, but instead took a flight to the UK a few hours after. On January 23, Hopkinton Police called Entwistle at his parents’ Clifford and Yvonne’s home in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, UK. They related how he had told them that he had left his Hopkinton home at about 9:00 a.m. EST, three days previously to go shopping. He told police that both his wife and daughter were in bed when he left. When he returned at around 11:00 a.m. EST, he says he found they had been shot dead and covered their bodies with a blanket.

Entwhistle was later arrested on the London Underground on February 9 and appeared in central London Bow Street magistrates’ court. At a brief hearing, he requested that he not be sent back to the United States at this stage”. Saying little else ? apart from to confirm his name, age, and address – he was then remanded in custody until a hearing the following day. The following day, however, in court he declared had decided to agree to being returned to the US as soon as possible. He was later extradited to the US to stand trial.

Entwistle did not testify and called no witnesses, at the 12-day trial, sitting stoically throughout, but claimed through his lawyer that his wife had killed her baby and herself and he had returned the gun to her parents’ house to protect her honour. Michael Fabbri, the prosecutor, said in summing up: “He wants us to believe that he somehow deeply and passionately loved the two of them. “However,” Fabbri continued, “He gets a one-way ticket to London with no luggage and doesn’t come back for the funeral. Talk about something that is incomprehensible.”

After deliberating for two days, the jury finally returned a verdict of guilty and he was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole.
