Brit Ex-Cop Arrested For Involvement In Uk-Thai Sex Slave Ring

A retired, ex-Merseyside traffic cop, turned private dick, was arrested in Suan Plu, Bangkok on May 21, 2008, for allegedly being instrumental in running a sex-slave ring, involving shipping Thai women to the UK for prostitution.

Ian Shuttleworth, 42, on a police disability pension, has been running the Thai-PI Private Detective Agency in Bangkok’s Sukhumvit Road for the past four years in partnership with another Brit ex-detective, supposedly with experience in investigating murder, anti-terrorism, drug trafficking and intelligence. The detective agency specialises in snooping on the Thai girlfriends of farangs to check if they are being faithful, issuing ‘Peace of Mind’ reports with catch phrase like “Wonder what she’s doing? Need Reassurance???? Thai Pi. Diligence and Confidentiality”, superimposed over snaps of Bangkok go-go pole dancers.

Bangkok Police Major General Panya Maman said of Shuttleworth “We arrested him because a victim, whom the suspect sent abroad but now is in Thailand, insisted that the suspect sent her for prostitution.”

Shuttleworth’s involvement in the UK-Thai sex-trafficking trade came to light after London’s Metropolitan Police tipped off Thai police, as a consequence of police raids in London which freed 30 Thai women sex-slaves. Nine Thai citizens appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court on April 22, charged with operating a sex-trafficking ring. The nine had allegedly been running five brothels in Greater London and were involved in sexual exploitation and money laundering.

Shuttleworth’s role was to lure naive Thai women to the UK with the promise of employment in restaurants, after extorting funds from them, supposedly to pay their airfares and arrange visas. The woman who had been repatriated told police her father paid Shuttleworth Bt530,000 (about 8,500 pounds sterling). He then took her to the UK, seized her passport and forced her to have paid sex along the way, (with himself for free, to boot) in London, Coventry and Scotland and then returned to the capital where he delivered her to a London restaurant, where she was sold to mamasan, Pongpoj Pitayanakul, 31, for GBP 28,000. A sum she was later told she would have to work in a brothel to pay off.

Shuttleworth protested his innocence at a media conference held in Bangkok on Wednesday; a view shared by his son, James, who said “I know my dad has nothing to worry about.” This view was endorsed by a Patpong bar owner, where Shuttleworth was a regular, who said: “This is difficult to believe. Ian is such a nice guy.”
