Pattaya, the 26th of August 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: At approximately 11:30pm on Thursday, Colonel Nunthawut Suwanla-ong (Pattaya Police Superintendent) was notified of a fire on the 4th floor of the Big C Shopping Center in North Pattaya. Due to the severity of the incident, Pattaya Deputy Mayor Ronnakit Ekkasing along with a team of 5 engines from the Pattaya Fire Department attended the incident.

On arrival, fire crews immediately witness a relatively severe blaze emanating from the upper floor of the shopping complex, while approximately 500 panic-stricken shoppers and employees evacuated from the building were gathered outside. In addition, a result of the blaze, an extensive traffic jam occurred along the length of Pattaya Second Road with passing motorists stopping haphazardly to catch a glimpse of the incident.

Department store security guards explained that the fire was at present contained to a bedding and manchester storeroom on the fourth floor of the building, next to the SFX Cinema. Thanks to the efficient and fast response of the Pattaya Fire Department, the blaze was contained and extinguished within 10-minutes, with current damage estimates reported at approximately Bt1 million.

Resultant investigations revealed that the blaze had most likely started from an electrical short circuit, which had reportedly caused a small fire earlier in the day at the same location. Center staff explained that a spotlight in the storeroom had short-circuited at approximately 5:00am on Thursday, causing the electrical cable to melt and fall on a stored mattress in the room. The incident caused a minor blaze, which was subsequently contained by employees in the storeroom at the time.

Investigators speculate that the blaze later in the evening was caused by the same electrical wire. Further examination will be conducted once it is safe to enter the still smoldering scene.
