Witnessed by some 80,000 fans at the Soccer City stadium in Johannesburg the five-time World Champions despatched with the Ivory Coast in entertaining style.

After a tense opening period, attacking midfielder Kaka supplied Luis Fabiano with the opening goal struck from an acute angle to the South American into the lead. A Fabiano second in the 50th minute all but ended the Ivory Coasts hopes of getting a result before a somewhat controversial Elano goal in the 62nd minute wrapped up the match. Sven-Goran Eriksson’s team got a late consolation goal through Didier Drogba but it was too little too late for the Africans.

Footballing minnows New Zealand stubbornly held reigning champions Italy to a 1-1 draw in their group F clash at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit. An early goal to New Zealand and a penalty to the Azzuri in the first half completed the scoring as the team from Oceania held off a relentless Italian attack.

Shane Smeltz was the hero for the All Whites after he scored a conclusively offside goal following a New Zealand free-kick. The Azzuri equalised from the penalty spot in the 29th minutes courtesy of Vincenzo Iaquinta. The siege on the New Zealand goal that followed was predicted but a determined performance, led by Captain Ryan Nelsen, saw the New Zealanders attain a shock draw.

Following Italy’s draw with New Zealand, Paraguay now sit on 4 points at the top of the group and look likely to attain a place in the second round providing they achieve a result against the determined Kiwi’s in their final encounter.

The Paraguayans, with five shots in the opening 25 minutes, took the lead on 27 minutes following a deft Enrique Vera goal. The score remained at 1-0 going into the interval as the Slovakians only managed 1 shot on goal in the opening period.
