Although there appears nothing untoward about his death, police are keen to a Bulgarian man who had been invited back to the couple?s apartment the morning he died.

Stephen Gately was found lying dead on a sofa, where he had apparently fallen asleep sometime during the early morning before, at his £1 million/Bt54 million holiday apartment in the upmarket resort Port Andratx on the Spanish island of Majorca. He was found by his civil partner, Andrew, at 1.45pm on Saturday, October 10, apparently having died in his sleep. Spanish police said they don?t know for certain how the singer died, although there don?t appear to be any suspicious circumstances. However, according to the Times Online, Stephen is reported to have been in his pyjamas. ?He was in a strange position,? an investigator said. ?He was squatting on the sofa, almost in a praying position.?

?There was no suicide note or evidence of any drug use or excessive drinking and the dead man?s friends were at a loss to explain what had happened. All we know is that they had gone out the night before till late and had quite a few drinks, and raised the alert when they found Stephen dead,? the following afternoon, according to a close source called in soon after the discovery of the dead pop singer.

Family spokesman, Irish solicitor Gerald Kean said: There’s no foul play involved and it’s not suicide.”It’s just a tragic accident is what we’ve been told and we’re happy that that is correct information. There is nothing untoward, it’s not drugs, we don’t believe, it’s not suicide, it’s not murder, it’s not a fight. That’s what we’ve been told.”

Stephan joined Boyzone in 1993 after answering an advert in Dublin to audition for Ireland’s first boyband. The band went on to amazing success with six number one singles, but broke up in 2000.

Stephan then went solo, releasing his album New Beginning in 2000. He then went on the first of many stage roles, including Joseph in Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber West End Production and the Child Catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The band reformed in 2007, releasing a new album and sold out two UK tours. A message on the Boyzone website read: Stephen tragically died yesterday whilst on holiday with his partner Andrew in Majorca. The rest of the boyz will be flying out today.

The surviving members of the band, Ronan Keating, Keith Duffy, Shane Lynch and Mikey Graham, flew to Majorca, on Sunday, arriving at the apartment at 8.30pm local time. “We have shared such wonderful times together over the years and were all looking forward to sharing many more. Stephen was a beautiful person in both body and spirit. He lit up our lives and those of the many friends he had all over the world. Our love and sympathy go out to Andrew and Stephen’s family. We love you and will miss you forever, ‘Steo’,” the band statement said.

Sir Elton John and his partner, David Furnish, who had originally introduced Stephan to his partner, Andrew, said Stephen was the kindest, gentlest soul. We send our love and condolences to his partner Andy and to his friends everywhere. Stephan had stunned his female fans in particular when he ?came out of the closet ten years ago.

The post-mortem examination will not take place until Tuesday because it is a Bank Holiday in Spain, today, Monday. The autopsy results and a toxicology report are expected by Wednesday. Apparently, the singer?s medical history is also likely to be examined to determine the cause of his death.
