Boyzone Star Autopsy Reveals Death By Natural Causes

Pattaya, October 14, [PDN]: the preliminary autopsy report on the 33 year-old Irish Boyzone star, Stephen Gately, show acute pulmonary oedema, a build-up of fluid on the lungs, effectively a heart attack, indicating that he died of natural causes. Stephen?s mother said that heart problems were a family legacy and that several relatives had died prematurely from heart conditions. Stephen?s body will be flown home to a Dublin for a funeral on Saturday.

A police source said that the post-mortem examination indicated the singer had succumbed to acute pulmonary oedema or sudden adult death syndrome (SADS), caused by an undiagnosed heart condition. The autopsy also showed that Stephen had vomited, but this was not a contributory factor, according to a court official. There were apparently ?no signs of suspicious circumstances? or anything to indicate Stephen?s death was ?caused by alcohol or drugs,? said a court spokesman.

According to reports in the UK?s Daily Telegraph, Dr Sanjay Sharma, a consultant cardiologist at Kings Hospital and the UK?s leading expert on Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS), stated the autopsy “shows his lungs have been water-logged very suddenly suggesting the heart had failed. ?In young people like Stephen, under 35, the vast majority of cases are caused by either hereditary diseases affecting the heart muscle itself or an electrical fault of the heart. If I was a betting man I would say it was an electrical fault, when the heart goes into a fatally fast rhythm, around 300 beats a minute. That would only need to happen for a couple of minutes to result in death.?

Stephen Gately?s partner, Andy Cowles, was questioned by a Spanish judge yesterday, however, concerning the events on Friday at a gay Palma nightclub, which lead up to the pop star?s death and to see if Stephen had a history of heart problems, or had felt sick. The judge will also question Georgi Dochev, 25, who the couple at taken him home after the club and who found the singer dead the following afternoon.

Tissue samples were also sent to Barcelona for toxicology tests to see if drugs or alcohol were involved in the singer?s death, but the results will not be ready for several weeks. If the results confirm death from natural causes, the case will be closed.

Gerald Kean, the family lawyer, said that his mother ?felt all along Stephen died from a heart-related problem. There is a heart condition on his dad Martin’s side of the family. Stephen would have had no idea he had this condition.”

Following the autopsy, the singer?s body was first transferred to a morgue and then a funeral parlour in Calvià, near his Andratx apartment, where his partner, Andy Cowles, went to view Stephen?s body saying: “I will always love you, Stevie.”

A spokesman for Boyzone said although the four remaining bandmates, Ronan Keating, Keith Duffy, Mikey Graham and Shane Lynch, had returned to Dublin, they were considering returning to Majorca by private jet to accompany the coffin home. Stephen?s funeral is being planned for St Laurence O?Toole?s Church, Dublin, on Saturday.
