Sattahip, the 22nd of May 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: At approximately 00:30am on Saturday, a loud explosion originating from the Sattahip market woke residents in the area who immediately contacted local police. Investigations of the incident found that a large homemade explosive device had been detonated on a patch of ground inside the market.

After approximately 30-minutes of searching, Captain Somneug Kaew-marerng (Peace Keeper Commander at the Sattahip Naval Base) notified Sattahip Police Superintendent Somchai Soontarawanic that 4 youths had been detained near Sattahip Park suspected to have been responsible for the explosion at Sattahip Market earlier in the night.

Arriving at the scene, the police were informed by Cpt. Kaew-marerng that the suspects had thrown several items into the pond at the park before they were approached by Peace Keeping officers. Subsequently officers arrested the 4 youths, all dressed in red shirts, before taking them to the scene of the explosion for investigation and interrogation.

Residents of the area approached police at the market, handing over various pieces of a giant firecracker before positively identifying the 4 youths as the offenders seen fleeing the area after the explosion.

Under interrogation the 4 offenders admitted to having purchased a collection of firecrackers from a local vendor in Sattahip. They further explained that they had emptied the gunpowder from the firecrackers into a length of PVC piping which they then attached a wick to and ignited in the Sattahip Market.

The 4 youths have had the incident recorded on their records whilst their parents were informed of their misdemeanours and asked to collect them from the Sattahip Police Station. The government imposed curfew is still in place for the Sattahip region until the 23rd of May 2010.
