Pattaya, the 14th February 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: A package wrapped with electrical wire was discovered near Thailand’s Supreme Court by one of their security guards who informed the Police.

Police bomb experts rushed to the scene and sprayed water over the package which they found to contain 3 pounds of C4 explosive. If detonated, it would have created serious damage to buildings also injuring people within a 50 metre radius.

The Supreme Court is a Division for holding people of Political Positions where Supreme Court Judges are scheduled to give their verdict on 26th February regarding the assets of the fugitive former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Some Bt 76.6 billion was accumulated illegally whilst he was in office. Thaksin was ousted in a bloodless coup in September 2006.

Sunday’s incident follows an unidentified bomber who fired an M79 grenade at Rajamangala University of Technology Phra Nakhon, about 50 metres from the Government House at 11pmon Saturday 13th February. The attacker was said to have fired the grenade from a vehicle on Rama V Road about 200 metres from where it exploded. He had intended to hit the Government House, but missed his target as the projectile fell inside the university, damaging four cars parked outside a faculty building and the roof of the pavilion.

Police removed the explosive for investigation and to probe the motive behind the incident, adding that the bomber is still at large and both incidents took place despite tightened security measures along with army security personnel which were put in place ahead of the final hearing on the frozen assets of Mr. Thaksin.

Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban stated that the bomb was a bad sign and ordered more security to be put in place, though there was not a need to impose a special law to control the situation.
